General Assembly of the United Nations
The General Assembly is the main representative organ of the UN. It was established in 1945 and it has been playing a significant role in standard-setting of international law. It is comprised of all 193 members of the United Nations, providing a full spectrum of international issues. The functions and powers of the General Assembly are established in the Charter of the United Nations. Some of these functions are to “make recommendations on the general principles of cooperation for maintaining international peace and security, including disarmament, initiate studies and make recommendations to promote international political cooperation, the development and codification of international law, the realization of human rights and fundamental freedoms, and international collaboration in the economic, social, humanitarian, cultural, educational and health fields, and consider and approve the United Nations budget and establish the financial assessments of Member States.”.
