Tips for new delegates

  • Learn the parliamentary procedure. It is important that you understand the procedure and you know how to use it because the better you use it, that's more points for you. Remember, the chair is grading you on this.

  • Understand the different stages of the committee. Learn the debate flow, this will help you to know what is going on around you, how to proceed with your arguments and it will decrease your nervousness and uncertainty.

  • Prepare your research binder. A good research binder is a lifesaver in case you feel lost in the debate. It will help you to reformulate your ideas once new solutions and facts are brought to your attention on the debate. A good research binder should have at least these 9 things:
    • Rules of procedure.
    • Information from UN Charter
    • Information from the CIA world factbook
    • News articles regarding your country and the topic to discuss
    • Background guide
    • Resolutions and treaties on the topic
    •  The voting record of your country
    • Academic papers
    • Your own ideas

  • Write your first speech in advance. This will help you be more calm and confident when you present it and it is a good way to be certain your ideas are well thought-out.

  • Have the list of connectives and clauses close. It is important that you use the appropriate language when speaking in the UN Model, keeping these lists will help you improve you vocabulary during the debate.
